Ice, ice, ice & more ice (oh and a lot of snow)

You may have heard me say this before, but I hate snow. The only time I can actually bear it is when I can sit at home all day and not have to drive anywhere. Otherwise, it sucks. I couldn’t imagine living in DC or Virginia or any of those other east coast cities that have been getting bombed with snow. I might have gone into a deep depression. Seriously. Our COO just informed us today that there will not be a snow day unless we get two feet of this fabulous white stuff. And then, if he can make it into work, then we are all required to make it into work. Blah.

Anywho – onto other fun things… My BFF, Mallory, and I love to explore Detroit. We got into doing it about five years ago when we would go out on day long Detroit tourist trips with our friend and native Detroiter. He would show us all sorts of fun, unexplored places in the city and we would take photos and ask lots of questions. It was awesome.

Yesterday, Mallory and I wanted to check out this new project going on in the D. It is called the Ice House Detroit. Find out more about the project on their blog, www.icehousedetroit.blogspot.com. It’s truly awesome. So right after work yesterday we headed out to the middle of the ghetto (really) to find this house. It was in a fun area that we hadn’t been too in years so it was great to see it again. Here are a few photos from our exploration.

(( Mal again by our favorite house in the hood ))

Right after visiting the Ice House, we drove over to Detroit’s own personal island (did you know we had an island of our own? Yup, we are just like New York with Manhattan). Our island is called Belle Isle and every winter a huge ice glob is created for all to see and play. I went last year and took a ton of photos (see here) but hadn’t made it out this year yet. Since Mal hadn’t seen this in many a moons and we were on the east side of Detroit, we decided to make a gander over to check it out. It was already past sunset by then so I couldn’t get a bunch of good photos (without a tipod too, boo!) but here are a few nice ones to show you what it’s all about.

(( who knew that ice could be so pretty? ))

So in conclusion, although I hate snow and winter and everything that has to do with cold. Detroit does have some pretty awesome things to see in the winter time. What cool things does your city have on display in the winter?

I'm with ya, I am not a fan of snow. It finally stopped here in WI and I wish it would be gone for GOOD! I am so ready for spring!

Two things I never knew.

I had no idea you weren't from here, either. You might've said where you were from originally during the first dinner, but it was so loud in there, it was hard to hear anything on your side of the table! ;) Or maybe you are from here, but you are pulling a Chandler/Joey thing where you visit the stuf in Detroit that residents don't. Maybe that is the correct reading.

Anyway, I also had no idea that this Ice House exists! I'd need to see its blobby goodness one day.

Excellent Ice House Pictures! I live in Adrian, MI. The city used to create one of those free form ice sculptures. I loved and looked forward to seeing it, but then the "powers that be" thought it wasn't important anymore. We haven't had one in fifteen years.
